Thomas Alfred “Tommy” Maddox (born September 2, 1971) is a former American football quarterback who played in the National Football League, the XFL, and the Arena Football League, among other leagues. In the Dallas/Fort Worth region, Maddox was reared in Hurst, Texas, where he was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in Hurst, Texas. Maddox played collegiately for UCLA for two seasons, during which time the Bruins won the John Hancock Bowl in 1991. In the first round of the 1992 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos selected Maddox from the University of Colorado. Original considered to be the Broncos great quarterback John Elway’s replacement, Maddox had a dismal rookie season and saw little action in his early NFL career due to a hamstring injury. Before the 1994 season, the Broncos moved Maddox to the Los Angeles Rams, and Maddox went on to play for the New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Atlanta Falcons before retiring in 1999. Maddox was a member of the Denver Broncos, New York Giants, and Atlanta Falcons under coach Dan Reeves.  When he was released by the Atlanta Falcons in 1997, Maddox went into the insurance industry for a while before making a return in professional football with the New Jersey Red Dogs of the Arena Football League. Maddox went on to become the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Xtreme of the XFL, a league that collapsed after its first season in 2001 after just one season. Maddox was the driving force behind the Xtreme’s victory in the Million Dollar Game and was named the league’s MVP for the campaign. The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Maddox later that year, and the two have been together since. Initially serving as a backup to Kordell Stewart, Maddox took over as the Steelers’ primary quarterback in 2002 and guided the team to a 10-5 record and a trip to the AFC championship game. The NFL named Maddox Comeback Player of the Year in 2002 in recognition of his accomplishments in 2002. Following a 6-10 season in 2003, Maddox was once again enlisted as the Steelers’ backup quarterback in 2004, this time to future Pro Bowler Ben Roethlisberger, who was drafted first overall in the 2003 draught. When the Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl XL following the 2005 season, Maddox was rewarded with a Super Bowl ring for his efforts in the backup position. 2005 was also his last year as a professional football player, with the season ending with his retirement. Following his retirement from football, Maddox went on to become a youth baseball instructor in his hometown of Dallas/Fort Worth.
