A police investigation is underway after Fernando Alonso was hospitalised when a car crashed into him while he was cycling in Switzerland.
The investigation has found that the crash was caused when a 42-year-old woman pulled in to park at a Lidl in Lugano. She didn't see Alonso on his bike and collided with him.
As a result of the incident, the two-time Formula 1 world champion had to undergo surgery to reconstruct his jaw.
"The cantonal police report that [Thursday] just before 14:00 in Viganello, a 42-year-old Swiss motorist domiciled in the Lugano area was driving in via La Santa in the direction of Pregassona," the Swiss police said in a statement.
"According to an initial reconstruction, and for reasons the police investigation will have to establish, while making a left-turn manoeuvre to enter a supermarket parking lot there was a collision with a 39-year-old Spanish citizen who was riding his bicycle passing a column of stationary vehicles in the opposite direction on the right.
"The collision occurred against the right side of the car.
"Cantonal police agents were supported by the police of the city of Lugano, as well as the rescuers of the Lugano Green Cross who, after providing initial care to the cyclist, transported him by ambulance to the hospital.
"The 39-year-old suffered a fractured jaw."
Despite the nasty injury, Alpine F1 expect Alonso to be ready to race when the 2021 season starts in Bahrain at the end of March.
