A teenager is lucky to be alive after his car plunged off a cliff-face in Victoria’s high country.

The 18-year-old Warrnambool man was driving along Mount Muller Rd near Mirimbah in Victoria’s northeast on Friday night when his Holden Trailblazer left the road about 11pm.

The 4wd fell about three metres before becoming stuck between trees.

The incident sparked a huge rescue effort from emergency services and a local towing company to pull the teenager from the wreck.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the young man had a “lucky escape” and was found to be uninjured at the scene.

“His vehicle came to rest on its side and was prevented from sliding further down the mountain after being stopped by trees,” she said.

“With a combined effort from police, SES, CFA, Fire Rescue Victoria, Ambulance Victoria and a local towing company, the vehicle was secured and the driver taken to safety.”

The rescue comes as Victoria Police launched Operation Regal, aiming to drive down the State’s road toll – currently at a 16-year high.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Acting Assistant Commissioner Martin O’Brien said drivers needed to be extra vigilant over the King’s Birthday weekend.

“Long weekends are historically high-risk on our roads, and the King‘s Birthday long weekend can present additional challenges,” he said.

“Whether you’re travelling across the state this weekend or heading to the alpine regions, please take extra care on the roads and be sure to drive to the conditions.”
