Shoshannah Stern is an American actress and writer who is best known for portraying characters such as Holly Brodeen in the drama TV series Threat Matrix (2003-2004), Megan Graves in the dark comedy-drama TV series Weeds (2005-2006, 2012), Bonnie Richmond in the post-apocalyptic action drama TV series Jericho (2006-2008), Eileen Leahy in the dark fantasy drama TV series Supernatural (2016-2020), and Kate in the comedy-drama TV series This Close (2018-2019). This Close was written and created by Shoshannah and Joshua Feldman, both of whom are deaf. They also starred as the principal characters of the show that revolves around two deaf best friends navigating their twenties in Los Angeles. This Close, thus, became the first TV series created, written by, and starring deaf artists. More than 20 other members of the cast and crew were also deaf. Besides, Shoshannah has played minor roles in films such as The Last Shot (2004), Adventures of Power (2008), The Hammer (2010), and Under the Boardwalk (2023).

Her first name, Shoshannah, means ‘Lily’ in Hebrew while her last name, Stern, means ‘Star’.

She was born in a family where she was 4th-generation deaf on her father’s side and 3rd-generation deaf on her mother’s side.

Her first language is ASL (American Sign Language – the predominant sign language of deaf communities in the US and most of Anglophone Canada). Besides that, Shoshannah can read lips and speak English without the help of an interpreter.

During her time at The California School for the Deaf, she played the titular role of Juliet in the school’s theatre program’s production of Romeo and Juliet. She also played Annabelle in The Cat and the Canary, Gymnasia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and the titular role of Anne in Anne of Green Gables.

Both Shoshannah and her older sister Louise (who is also deaf) played cameo roles in The Auteur Theory, a 1999 comedic murder mystery film.

At the Deaf West Theatre, a non-profit arts organization based in Los Angeles, she has portrayed characters like Susan in the play Open Window and Sarah in the play Children of a Lesser God.

Shoshannah’s portrayal of Dr. Lauren Riley (2 episodes in 2020) on Grey’s Anatomy (a long-running and highly popular American medical drama TV series) was the first recurring deaf doctor role on a prime-time network TV show.
