Autobarn co-founder Garry Dumbrells family selling circa-1891 Hawthorn East mansion
A landmark 131-year-old mansion owned by the family of a racing and motoring business legend is set to break its own record as Hawthorn East’s priciest home.
The family of late Autobarn co-founder Garry Dumbrell is selling ‘Ellerslie’ at 16 Harcourt St with an $18.5m-$19.5m asking range.
Set on 3340sq m with manicured gardens, a swimming pool, mod-grass tennis court, an outdoor shower and water fountain, it broke Hawthorn East’s house price record when it last sold for $16.5m in 2017, according to CoreLogic records.

The house, designed by renowned architect John Beswicke and built in 1891, boasts period features including stained glass windows, high ceilings and a tuck-pointed facade crowned by a gothic-style tower.
Marshall White Stonnington director Marcus Chiminello described the six-bedroom mansion as
“one of the finest homes in the city of Boroondara”.
“It is rich in history blended with all the modern amenities a family could want,” Mr Chiminello said.
He said Ellerslie’s owners had extensively updated the stately home in keeping with its period character.
“Every inch of the property has been renovated since they purchased, all the bathrooms, kitchens and a guest wing offers a lot of accommodation in the home making it perfect for a large family,” Mr Chiminello said.
He said one of the main bedroom’s walk-in wardrobes contained a “spectacular”
custom-designed shoe cupboard.
The property was ideal for both informal and formal entertaining, Mr Chiminello said.
“Whether its 10 people or 500 people, it would fit them all,” he added.
“The parlour room has a fully-fitted bar, I’ve never seen such a well-stocked bar, and also has his and her powder rooms.”
Ellerslie’s other highlights include seven bathrooms, Melbourne city views and a self-contained maisonette.
Two-time Bathurst 1000 starter Garry Dumbrell died in 2021 aged 64, more than a decade after being diagnosed with cancer.
Garry was father to now-retired Super2 and Supercars Championship multiple title winner Paul Dumbrell and Lucas Dumbrell, a former racing driver who went on to form his own racing team.
Expressions of interest close at 3pm on September 5.
